Train the Trainers - A comprehensive fatigue risk management course for training managers.
This 2-day workshop is for staff/managers who intend to train their staff in fatigue management. The course can be adapted to provide the trainers with the necessary knowledge to deliver the Shiftwork Services 'Living with Shiftwork' or the 'Driver Fatigue' Training Programmes in-house. In order to do this they will need to have an understanding of the principles behind fatigue-risk management. This workshop will provide the necessary training for them to do this.
Session 1
Why we need to be concerned about fatigue
- Introduction to fatigue-risk management and why organisations are committed to reducing fatigue-risk within the workforce
- Facts and statistics about fatigue
- Review accidents and incident case histories
- Safety and performance challenges of fatigue in your organisation
- The effects of fatigue on reaction times, risk taking, decision making, mood and cognitive function.
- A review of current policy
Session 2
Reducing Fatigue-risk
- Identify fatigue-risk related hazards in the workplace
- Identify protection/control measures against fatigue-risk
- Managing real life fatigue-risk related scenarios within your organisation
- Investigating the role of fatigue in accidents / incidents
- Assessing individuals aptitude for shiftwork
- Developing a fatigue-risk management plan
Session 3
Getting A Good Sleep and Being Alert at Work (information based on the book, Getting A Good Night’s Sleep by Fiona Johnston)
- What is sleep and why do we need it
- Sleeping disorders that interrupt sleep – how a supervisor can assess these and when to take action
- Overcoming common sleep problems
- Why some alertness strategies are better than others and how a supervisor can help a worker make smart choices
- Balancing work-life with home-life and what a supervisor can do to help workers meet this challenge
- Review of resources available to supervisors and workers (books, websites, newsletters, posters etc.)
- Fatigue and sleep knowledge test
- Round table discussion and action plan
Session 4
Getting Buy-in From Staff
- Promoting a fatigue safe workplace
- Honest reporting of fatigue related incidents
- Staff reactions to FAID, hours of work
- Next steps
As part of the workshop attendees receive a detailed resource pack which contains articles, references, useful web sites etc. along with a copy of the PowerPoint presentations used on the course. In addition individuals will receive a copy of the book Getting a Good Night’s Sleep by Fiona Johnston.
